THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE MUSIC

LEADERSHIP

Board of Directors

The volunteers who keep CantaMed singing, guiding our community, our concerts, and our outreach.

  • Renee-Pier Fortin Boudreault - Chair

Renee is a pediatric hematologist-oncologist and the proud, slightly sleep-deprived mother of six, which automatically qualifies her as a master multitasker. Music is her happy place, even if she’s far from pro level. She can play piano, violin, sax, guitar, and ukulele-each with great enthusiasm and varying degrees of competence. Singing with the choir is one of her favourite escapes, and she ranks herself solidly at “campfire level”, just a notch above “shower soloist”. As one of the choir’s founders, she is thrilled to help create a space filled with joy, connection, and zero pressure: just harmony, laughter, and the simple magic of making music because it feels good.

  • Stephanie Veldhuijzen van Zanten - Secretary

Stephanie is a pediatric palliative care physician who works at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and Roger Neilson Children’s Hospice. She is a proud Maritimer who works with an extraordinary team of equally committed humans who somehow tolerate her love of bright colours, extroverted energy, and use of humour.

Outside of work she has three kids of her own who keep her on her toes and maintain a healthy stream of constant semi-controlled chaos. She loves to sing in a choir which is a weekly dose of joy, community and musical therapy.

  • Tara Fehlings - President

Tara is a family physician and proud mom of two amazing kids and a very fluffy Samoyed dog Kylo. When she's not caring for her patients, you'll find her rocking out to pop songs on the radio, playing the piano and dragging her family on long hikes. Since she was little she has loved the fun and connection that comes through choral singing. She is thrilled to be part of our Women Physician choir in Ottawa and looks forward to lots of fun, smiles, laughter and making beautiful music together!

  • Heidi King - Director

Heidi has been singing for about as long as she’s been speaking, which means her first audiences did not get a choice in the matter. She joined her first choir in kindergarten and has not stopped singing (or speaking) since. As a soprano and proud member of the executive, Heidi loves the instant connection that comes from singing with others. As a psychiatrist, she also appreciates the accidental mindfulness that comes from trying to breathe, watch the conductor, and hit the high notes all at the same time.

When not at choir, Heidi can be found with her family and her two duck tolling retrievers, who are both excellent listeners and completely tone-deaf, which keeps her ego nicely balanced.

  • Catherine Folkerson Chen - Treasurer

Catherine is a family doctor who spends her days diagnosing ailments and her evenings chasing after two kids. With a degree in music, she often wonders if her real talent lies in keeping the chaos at bay or if it's just the cat serenading her from the windowsill. A proud choir member, she can hit high notes while simultaneously dodging Lego landmines. Balancing medicine and motherhood, Catherine proves that laughter-and maybe a little meowing-really is the best medicine.

DIRECTING, FROM THE PIANO

Our Music Director

The musicians who shape our sound, lead our rehearsals, and bring each season's repertoire to life

Carolina Arnoni-Ting

Carolina is an R&B, jazz, rock, pop, and Latin pianist. She is a graduate of Carleton University where she earned her Bachelor of Music Honours degree in jazz piano.

A devoted community builder, Carolina has dedicated over a decade to teaching music in both theory and piano performance in classical, jazz, rock, pop, Latin, and R&B. She has arranged for a cappella, four-horn harmony and big band as well as piano ensemble, duets (1-piano, 4-hands and piano/vocal) and solos.

Carolina has performed with many bands, including the Jasen Colson Band (classic rock), the Magic Machine (musical theatre), and Beachfires (R&B/pop). She sang as a high alto in the Capital Vox Jazz Choir. She has performed on notable stages such as the National Arts Centre Fourth Stage, Ottawa Bluesfest, and the Ottawa Pride Festival, among others and can also be heard on various local albums and music videos and has participated in her first pit band production of In The Heights (2025).

A creative soul at heart, Carolina loves to lose herself in music through her various keyboards (acoustic, electric, keytar), singing, and arranging or writing. Outside of music, she enjoys longs walks in nature (preferably with a dog), reading, writing, visual arts and more recently, exploring the wonders of gardening, crocheting, and voice acting.

Bringing energy, creativity, and fun to performances and rehearsals alike, Carolina is deeply committed to building inclusive, joyful musical spaces and helping singers grow both musically and personally.
